Mile Rocks Lighthouse

Mile Rocks Lighthouse, located a mile from the Golden Gate Bridge, was built in 1906 and operated for 60 years, when the tower was removed. Only the foundation and base remain. Building of the lighthouse was prompted by the sinking of the SS City of Rio, which wrecked on the rocks in 1901. One hundred and twenty-eight persons, of 209 aboard, lost their lives when the ship sank.
